25th October 1914 Sunday
On the move at dawn, moved to trenches occupied by HLI, attacked through woods (Beccleure) advanced half a mile to edge of another wood, here we had to charge then fall back slightly and dig in like lightning – Some awful sights in German dead caused by our artillery fire. Late that evening took up Signal Headquarters in peasants house which had been used by the Germans for their machine guns that afternoon, our artillery had shelled them out. Bed and bed clothes of all the beds (3) soaked in blood. – Remnants of German uniform in awful state found in this house- with an overcoat of an officer – got what sleep we could during the night – raining in torrents.
It is likely that Leo is referring here to Polygon Wood
