September 19th 1914

19th September 1914   Saturday.

Relieved by 3rd Coldstreamers and very nice too , as things are bad with us – Raining badly, everything sodden. Went back to town of Soupir for a rest, billeted in farm – very comfy, had an alarm or two during the time – nothing much doing, though we lay in wait behind our front line trenches ( at the time we did not know what for) to do a bayonet charge which never came off, thank God – Germans did not attack. On our way back passed long string of ambulance wagons which had been brought up for the affair. What a hope !
