August 12th 1914

12th August 1914 Wednesday
Reveille at 4 am. Paraded at 5 am. Served out with 120 rounds of ball ammunition – Inspected after this to see we had all our kit etc. , marched off about 6 am en route for Nine Elms Station (Irish Guards Band accompanied us part of way) – Despite the early hour there were crowds to see us off. Some heart breaking partings too – was very thankful I’d got mine over the night before – Entrained at Nine Elms Station at 8 am. Bound for Southampton (Did not know this until we got there about 2 p-m.) Embarked about 3 pm on SS Novana, Sailed about 4 pm. – Arrived at Le Havre about 6 am following morning – escorted across channel by Indomitable and destroyers.
