6th August 1914 Thursday
Rattled up by postman about 2 am. With mobilisation paper for me – Wife in frantic state, broke down badly- managed to calm her feelings and eventually got to sleep about 3 am. Up again at 10 am. Had breakfast, said goodbye to wife and kiddies and went into Chelsea Barracks (London SW) to report. Got to Chelsea about 11 a.m. Passed doctor, went through the necessary preliminaries, re separation allowance etc. etc. – Drew kit and equipment about 11.45 am. Left Chelsea Barracks in full war paint- Marched with party to Wellington Barracks. Here we joined our different companies – The same we originally belonged to when going on the Reserve. Got kit marked etc. had some dinner – allowed out in the evening for couple of hours – Went home
