August 4th 1914

4th August 1914 Tuesday

On duty at CTO – J Division (Telegraphs)
British ultimatum to Germany today.

aug 04

Note: In the diary the day is originally given as Wednesday, which is crossed out and replaced by Tuesday. This one day correction continues in the diary until 16th October. It is almost certain that the diary was written by Leonard later from his original notes.
The CTO he refers to is the Central Telegraph Office which was located at the corner of Newgate Street and St Martin’s Le Grand . It was the clearing house for both inland and overseas telegrams. Badly damaged during the early part of the second world war it was finally demolished in 1967.
